JavaScript worm targets Yahoo! | 13 June 2006

A JavaScript worm that takes advantage of an unpatched vulnerability in Yahoo!’s webmail service has been discovered on the net. The JS-Yamanner worms spreads when a Windows user accesses Yahoo! Mail to open an email sent by the worm. The attack works because of a vulnerability in Yahoo! Mail that enables scripts embedded within HTML emails to be run within a user’s browser instead of being blocked.

Once executed, the worms forwards itself to an infected users’ contacts on Yahoo! Mail. It also harvests these address and sends them to a remote internet server. Only contacts with an email address of either @yahoo.com or @yahoogroups.com are hit by this behavior.

Infected emails commonly have the subject line "New Graphic Site" and are spoofed so as to appear from "av3@yahoo.com". Users who open infected emails will be redirected to a webpage at www.av3.net/index.htm.

Symantec Security Response senior manager Kevin Hogan said: "Unlike its predecessors, which would require the user to open an attachment in order to launch and propagate, JS-Yamanner makes use of a security hole in the Yahoo! web mail program in order to spread to other Yahoo! users. Yahoo! is a popular email tool, and although normally closed to such threats, the exploitation of this vulnerability provides access to a significant number of internet users.

"As there is no patch at present, users are recommended to update virus definitions and firewall signatures and to block any emails sent from av3@yahoo.com."

PCs to developing world ‘fuel malware’ | 13 June 2006

Programs to send PCs to third world countries might inadvertently fuel the development of malware for hire scams, an anti-virus guru warns. Eugene Kaspersky, head of anti-virus research at Kaspersky Labs, cautions that developing nations have become leading centres for virus development. Sending cheap PCs to countries with active virus writing cliques might therefore have unintended negative consequences, he suggests.

"A particular cause for concern is programs which advocate 'cheap computers for poor third world countries'," Kaspersky writes. "These further encourage criminal activity on the internet. Statistics on the number of malicious programs originating from specific countries confirm this: the world leader in virus writing is China, followed by Latin America, with Russia and Eastern European countries not far behind."

But what about all the positive uses in education, for example, possible through the use of second-hand PCs in developing nations? We reckon these more than outweigh the possible misuse of some computers at the fringes of such programs.

We wanted to quiz Kaspersky more closely on his comments but he wasn't available to speak to us at the time of going to press.

A spokesman for Kaspersky Labs agreed that PC donation programs have benefits but maintained that in countries with "fewer legitimate openings" for work the possibility of "unintended side effects" can't be overlooked. He said that Eugene Kaspersky's comments should be viewed in the context of a wider discussion of criminal virus writing, contained in an essay on the anti-virus industry here.

Google Updates Maps | 13 June 2006

Google Inc. on Monday released the latest upgrades to the mapping tools that rank among the company’s biggest success outside the Internet-leading search engine that steers much of the Web’s traffic. The improvements include a major expansion of the satellite imagery included in Google’s three-dimensional software for touring Earth.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said four times more land will be covered in the latest version of its free Google Earth software, enabling about one-third of the world’s population to obtain an aerial view of their homes and neighborhood.

The software also is being offered in German, Spanish, French and Italian. The computer coding for the first time will work on Linux operating platforms, a breakthrough likely to broaden the product's appeal.

More than 100 million people have downloaded Google Earth software since it was offered a year ago, according to figures released by the company for the first time Monday.

Meanwhile, Google's online mapping service for finding directions and locating businesses has emerged as a major challenger to the longtime leaders in the category, AOL's Mapquest and Yahoo Inc.

Google Maps attracted 26 million U.S. visitors in May to rank third behind Mapquest at 43.5 million visitors and Yahoo at 26.1 million, according to Nielsen/NetRatings Inc. The traffic at Google's mapping service tripled during the past year while the volume of visitors at Mapquest and Yahoo rose by less than 20 percent, Nielsen/NetRatings said.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt hailed the company's mapping products as "one of the defining opportunities around search."

For all its inroads in mapping, Google still hasn't provided a clear road map for making money from the products - much to the dismay of Wall Street analysts.

Google took a small step toward addressing that concern Monday by announcing it will license usage of its online maps to businesses and government agencies that want to customize the service. The licenses, expected to begin at about $10,000 annually, will include support from Google's engineering staff.

The online maps already have enabled programmers to create Web sites that draw upon independent databases to graphically illustrate information about everything from local crime statistics to apartments available for rent in specific neighborhoods.

Google estimates about 30,000 of these mapping hybrids, known as "mashups," have been created in the past year. Despite the licensing plans, Google emphasized it plans to improve its application programming interface to make it easier to create even more mapping mashups.

Google hosted more than 200 Web developers at its headquarters Monday to trumpet its upgrades.

Office 2007 will need extra software to create PDF files | 13 June 2006

One of the more eagerly awaited features of Office 2007, the ability to save files in PDF, will now have to be downloaded separately. The exact reasons for this are unclear but it seems that Microsoft and Adobe were unable to agree on how it should be included. Microsoft will make this feature available as a separate download. The PDF format has become very popular as it guarantees that a document will look as it is intended, regardless of missing fonts or images on another computer. It has been included on competing products such as OpenOffice and WordPerfect Office for many years.

Thankfully, software such as PDF reDirect can be used to make PDF files from Office 2007. This software appears to Windows as a printer and so works with any program.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Computeractive that the company had made a significant effort to accommodate Adobe but it reached the point where it felt that Adobe’s demands were too much and decided to remove the feature altogether.
Adobe has remained reticent on the subject. A statement from the company said that they do not comment on discussions with partners as a matter of policy. It denied rumours of any legal action against Microsoft and maintained that the ” sole motivation is to maintain a fair, competitive landscape in the software industry”.

Microsoft is also planning to make support for the OASIS OpenDocument file format available as a separate download. The OASIS format was recently ratified by the International Standards Organisation.

Wi-Fi crypto - China calls foul | 13 June 2006

China says the international standards group IEEE is engaging in a ‘conspiracy’ and ‘amoral behaviour’ to defeat its home grown encryption technology for wireless networks, WAPI. A Chinese delegation walked out of a meeting on Thursday last week in Prague, claiming unfair treatment. The standards committee, dominated by Western manufacturers, is seeking to endorse 802.11i as the preferred crypto technology instead. State owned news outlets say the IEEE failed to observe its own rules after only seven out of 17 countries opposing WAPI attended the vote.

“The monopoly force from the American standard maker IEEE poisoned the voting process and created an unfair atmosphere at the Prague meeting,” a delegate told the Xinhua news agency.

China believes the Western manufacturers’ wireless encryption is inadequate, objects to paying royalties for it, and wants to foster its home grown technology industry.

China’s frustration with the standards process is understandable. Vendor representatives at the IEEE quibbled over trivia for years - the standards process began in 1994, but products didn’t reach market until the end of the decade.

When 802.11b finally appeared, it featured a risible encryption technology, WEP, which could be cracked in seconds. And 802.11 has failed to produced much of a standard since, endorsing an alphabet soup of quasi-’standards’ that confuse the public and IT buyers. With 802.11 in such a mess, one can hardly blame the Chinese for trusting their own technology rather more.

WAPI was mandated to be the default encryption for China’s home produced WLAN products from 1 June 2004. An eleventh hour trade deal - in which, interestingly, China dropped its objections to GM crops - saw China promise to sideline development of its own 3G technology TD-SCDMA, and WAPI. Intel had threatened to stop selling Wi-Fi products in China unless it got its way.

However, it’s now clear that China had no intention of relegating its own technology to the back burner. An impressive showing from vendors at 3GSM in Barcelona this year showed that TD-SCDMA is very real indeed.

“China has lost another valuable opportunity to constructively discuss the technical merits of the two security amendments,” IEEE board chairman Steve Mills said in a statement.

Microsoft Adds Libraries to Its Own Book Search Program | 11 June 2006

Microsoft Windows Live Book Search will add out-of-copyright content from libraries at University of California and University of Toronto to its digital collection. The program, similar to Google Book Search Library Project, will allow users to answer questions and find information within digitized book content.

With more than 100 libraries on 10 campuses, UC is the largest research and academic library in the world, while Toronto has the largest library network in Canada. These two institutions combined have almost 50 million volumes.

“As Canada’s most important research institution, the University of Toronto recognizes its responsibility to share its resources with readers everywhere,” said Carole Moore, chief librarian at University of Toronto. “Our work with Microsoft in this initiative is an important first step toward mass digitization of materials held in trust by our library so that they can be accesses globally.”

“Our alliance with the libraries of these two extraordinary institutions of higher education underscores the importance and value of Windows Live Book Search to providing free access to out-of-copyright content to everyone with access to the Internet,” said Danielle Tiedt, general manager of the Windows Live Premium Search.

Microsoft also recently introduced Windows Live Books Publisher Program, in which currently copyrighted content can be submitted to be included in the Windows Live Book Search program.

Data on nuclear agency workers hacked | 11 June 2006

A computer hacker got into the U.S. agency that guards the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile and stole the personal records of at least 1,500 employees and contractors, a senior U.S. lawmaker said on Friday. The target of the hacker, the National Nuclear Safety Administration, is the latest agency to reveal that sensitive private information about government workers was stolen.

The incident happened last September but top Energy Department officials were not told about it until this week, prompting the chairman of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee to demand the resignation of the head of the NNSA.

An NNSA spokesman was not available for comment.

The NNSA is a semi-autonomous arm of the Energy Department and also guards some of the U.S. military's nuclear secrets and responds to global nuclear and radiological emergencies.

Committee chairman Rep. Joe Barton said NNSA Administrator Linton Brooks should be "removed from your office as expeditiously as possible" because he did not quickly notify senior Energy Department officials of the breach.

"And I mean like 5 o'clock this afternoon if it's possible," Barton, a Texas Republican, said in a statement.

Earlier this week the Pentagon revealed that personal information on about 2.2 million active-duty, National Guard and Reserve troops was stolen last month from a government employee's house.

Zero-Day Exploits Abound at Legitimate Web Sites | 11 June 2006

According to the latest research from software maker Exploit Prevention Labs, malware targeting flaws in popular software including Microsoft’s Windows is being delivered by more Web sites than ever, despite efforts to patch the vulnerabilities. Security applications vendor Exploit Prevention Labs released the findings of a new report that contends that Internet-based threats using so-called zero-day attacks continue to proliferate at a rapid pace.

In addition to appearing with greater frequency than ever before, and on a larger numbers of seemingly legitimate Web sites, researchers said that the attacks on software vulnerabilities in popular programs such as Microsoft Windows are increasingly being used for criminal purposes.

Exploit Prevention Labs said that the zero-day exploits are specifically being used by international cyber-crime rings targeting the operating system and Web browser flaws.

In the month of May, the company said that the widely publicized WMF (Windows Metafile) attack, launched in December 2005, remained the top threat zero-day threat on the Web, accounting for roughly 33 percent of all the exploits it detected.

WebAttacker, a software application that generates Web-based exploits, accounted for almost 25 percent of all reported threats, while an exploit known as CreateTextRange represented almost 21 percent, and the Iframers launcher script accounted for almost 19 percent. Of the four exploits all of the code except CreateTextRange is known to have been created in Russia.

For its part, Microsoft released a security patch for WMF in January.

Roger Thompson, chief technology officer of Exploit Prevention Labs, said that there is a growing trend among malware sources to use the power of the Internet and search engine sites to distribute their code.

Criminals are buying pre-fabricated zero-day attacks from malware writers and using any means they can find to hide the threats on legitimate Web sites and secretly offload the programs onto the machines of unsuspecting end users.

As a result, rising numbers of people with less sophisticated technical backgrounds are trying to cash in on scams aimed at stealing personal data or companies' proprietary information.

"I wouldn't say that it's fair to say this problem has reached epidemic proportions, compared to the size of the Web, but it's growing and the people doing this are making money from adware, spyware, rootkits and even selling fake anti-spyware," said Thompson.

"When Microsoft issues a security patch it typically does a good job of blocking the threats, but there are so many people unaware of the malicious attacks on legitimate Web sites, and all the patches they need, that these criminals will continue to push as hard as they can."

The zero-day attackers are also seeking to directly enlist the help of Web site owners to distribute their code, offering cash rewards for the number of PCs they can secretly infect using the seemingly legitimate URLs.

It has become so easy to drop exploits onto many pages however, said Thompson, that most site operators won't notice when someone has added an attack to their own code.

Exploit Prevention Labs said it recently detected an exploit distribution network controlled by a single organization that was using a network of 40 Internet domains, each of which was linked to an average of 500 infected sites, for a total of roughly 20,000 Web pages forwarding the groups' attacks.

A majority of the exploits arriving on the Web today are being distributed out of Russia and other Eastern European countries, according to the report, and typically attempt to install rootkit attacks onto PCs, which can be nearly impossible to remove.

And with it well-known that the code used to launch the high-profile WMF attacks was purchased for only $5,000, potential criminals can get their hands on dangerous malware tools relatively cheaply.

By the end of June, Thompson predicts that WebAttacker will replace the WMF attacks as the top exploit threat on the Internet.

Microsoft Can’t Patch Flaw in Windows 98, ME | 11 June 2006

With support for its Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition operating systems about to expire, Microsoft has given up on the idea of patching a critical security vulnerability in the products, the company announced this week. The flaw has to do with the way Windows Explorer handles the Component Object Model objects used by Windows programs. Attackers could take over a system by tricking users into visiting a Web site that would then connect them to a remote file server.

“This remote file server could then cause Windows Explorer to fail in a way that could allow code execution,” Microsoft said.

Microsoft had fixed the problem in the majority of its Windows products on April 11. At the time, it had promised to deliver a patch for Windows 98 and ME "as soon as possible."

Change of Plans

However, the company this week updated its bulletin on the issue, saying that this fix would require a lot of work and would possibly break applications being used on these platforms.

"After extensive investigation, Microsoft has found that it is not feasible to make the extensive changes necessary...to eliminate the vulnerability," Microsoft's bulletin states. "We have found that these architectures will not support a fix for this issue now or in the future."

Microsoft is about to stop providing security fixes for Windows 98 and ME altogether. The company's next monthly patch release next Tuesday is the last scheduled security fix for the two operating systems.

Microsoft executives could not be reached to comment for this story.

Seeing machine” offers legally blind view of world | 11 June 2006

A legally blind poet at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has designed a “seeing machine” that allows people with limited vision to see faces of friends, read or study the layouts of buildings they intend to visit. The device, which MIT estimates costs about $4,000 to manufacture, plugs into a personal computer and uses light-emitting diodes to project selected images into a person’s eye, allowing visually impaired users to see words or pictures.

"The advantage of this kind of display is there's no extraneous stuff in your peripheral vision that gets in the way," Elizabeth Goldring, who has published three volumes of poetry, said in an interview. "The image gets projected right onto the retina."

The device, which Goldring calls a "seeing machine," is housed in a box that measures about 12 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches.

The seeing machine is not wearable and would not allow one to easily navigate through a crowded, unfamiliar space. But it helps a user study a color image, such as printed words, pictures of people or room layouts. It only works for people with some living retina cells and a completely blind person would not be able to use the device.

It was tested on 10 people with limited vision -- the majority of whom were legally blind, meaning they can see nothing smaller than the large "E" on an eye chart. The majority could see the images and recognize simple words.

About 1.3 million Americans are legally blind, according to data from the American Foundation for the Blind.

Previous technologies aimed at people with limited vision work like closed-circuit television, capturing an image with a camera and projecting it onto a video screen or video goggles, not directly onto the retina, according to Darren Burton, national program associate for technology at the American Foundation for the Blind, in Huntington, West Virginia.

Former RIAA head: P2P Lawsuits Are Wrong | 11 June 2006

Former RIAA head Hilary Rosen now believes that the RIAA is wrong by pursuing their lawsuits of individuals for using P2P programs. “…the lawsuits have outlived most of their usefulness and that the record companies need to work harder to implemnt a strategy that legitimizes more p2p sites and expands the download and subscription pool by working harder with the tech community to get devices and music services to work better together.”

Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity teaches Flash design rather than simply Flash itself. With a standalone series of walkthroughs and tutorials for Flash beginners coming from a graphics field, this book teaches Flash in the context of real-world projects. Rather than learn a Flash tool for the sake of it, you learn which areas of Flash are important, and which are less used, simply by seeing how typical content is actually created. And rather than a text-heavy approach, this graphically rich book leads you through hands-on examples by illustration

Book Description

Paperback: 1272 pages
Publisher: Macromedia Press November 3, 2003

Moving beyond the explanations that are readily available in the product's documentation and the commonly available introductory guides, author Laura Gutman draws on her own extensive experience as a multimedia Web application developer to explore some of the software's more creative and complex uses--many of which involve features new to Dreamweaver MX 2004: editing files, manipulating databases, and changing code directly on remote FTP and network servers without first stetting up a Dreamweaver site; using CSS to improve your design procedures; and more. Title: Hack Proofing Your Network: Internet Tradecraft
Author: Ryan Russell
Publisher: Syngress
Publication Date: 2000-01-15
Number Of Pages: 450

If you don’t hack your systems, who will?
One of the reasons I put this book project together is that I believe security professionals should be hackers. In this case, by hackers, I mean people who are capable of defeating security measures. This book purports to teach people how to be hackers. In reality, most of the people who buy this book will do so because they want to protect their own systems and those of their employer. So, how can you prevent break-ins to your system if you don’t know how they are accomplished? How do you test your security measures? How do you make a judgment about how secure a new system is?

When you’re through reading Hack Proofing Your Network, you’ll understand terms like “smashing the stack,” “blind spoofing,” “building a backward bridge,” “steganography,” “buffer overflow” and you’ll see why you need to worry about them. You will learn how to protect your servers from attacks by using a 5-step approach:

 Planning

 Network/Machine Recon

 Research/Develop

 Execute Attack and Achieve Goal

 Cleanup

And you’ll understand the theory of hacking, how to fend off local and remote attacks, and how to report and evaluate security problems.

The Only Way to Stop a Hacker Is to Think Like One.

Develop a Well-Measured Defense Against CybercriminalsWhen we speak of the hacker mind, then, we have come to mean the mind of a miscreant motivated by a broad range of ulterior purposes. We mean script kiddies who download scripts written by others and execute them with the click of a button, we mean vandals with limited impulse control, we mean thieves of data, and then we mean all the people who use that data for extortion, corporate or industrial espionage, state-level spy craft, identity theft, grand larceny, blackmail, vicious revenge, or terror. That's lots of kinds of minds, needing to be understood, needing to be profiled, needing to be penetrated, needing to be known inside and out.--from the preface by Richard Thieme.
